Can a Stockport Institution Save Wigan's Grassroots Music Scene?

Recently, a cornerstone of Wigan's music scene, 'Indiependence', closed its doors for good. Since its opening in 2009, during the height of the 'indie' music boom, Indiependence set itself apart from the competition by launching the now-legendary 10-4-10 event and hosting a whole range of musical talent.

Over the years, it became Wigan's only dedicated rock club and a vital platform for emerging local artists.

At the time of its closure, Wigan had just two other grassroots music venues, but neither nurtured up-and-coming talent quite like Indiependence did. The news was devastating for many in the community—it felt like the end of an era, and for me, it brought back a flood of memories. I didn’t think anything could replace it.

Then came Bask. This relatively new bar, which opened in Stockport in 2022, quickly became a go-to destination for live music, not just locally but beyond. Bask regularly hosts shows featuring up-and-coming bands alongside established artists like Reverend and the Makers, Jamie Webster, and The Lathums.

When I heard that Bask was taking over Indiependence to open Bask Live, I felt a renewed sense of hope.

Their opening night, headlined by local band The Lilacs with support from Dylan Robert, sold out well in advance—a promising sign. They didn't disappoint on the night and neither did the crowd; seeing a full house sing along and enjoy the show felt incredible.

Coupled with recent gigs in Wigan by big names like Noel Gallagher, James Arthur, and local legend Richard Ashcroft at Robin Park, there’s certainly hope for the Wigan music scene. If they stay true to form, I firmly believe Bask Live is poised to play a crucial role in its revival.
